Amidst rumors of war along the Liberia-Guinea borders, the government of Liberia has assured the public that “no war” is coming to Liberia. Deputy Information Minister for Press and Public Affairs, Daniel Sando, gave the assurance on behalf of the government during the November 26, 2024 edition of the Ministry of Information Press Briefing, clarifying that Liberia and Guinea have enjoyed bilateral relations for decades; as such, no war is coming to Liberia.
The Deputy Information Minister was quoting the Chief of Staff of the Arm Forces of Liberia, Brigadier General Davison Forleh, in the wake of national security concern over the presence, in Liberia, of Ibrahima Cherif, an alleged coup plotter who wanted to topple the Junta government of Guinea. According to sources, Ibrahima Cherif was arrested in Liberia and turned over to Guinean authorities.
Amidst the concerns, there was a huge deployment of military personnel in Lofa along the Liberia-Guinea borders, but Minister Sando quoted the Liberian Army Chief as saying that the deployment was part of a confirmatory aerial patrol visit by Chief of Staff Davidson Fayiah Forleh and U.S. Ambassador to Liberia Mark Toner to some border points in Liberia as part of an effort to ensure the safety of Liberia and Liberians and to avoid cross-border threats.
Minister Sando narrated that to help secure the Liberia-Guinea borders, the government, through the AFL Chief of Staff, has requested its long-standing partner, the U.S. government, to help with security in some strategic locations along the two countries’ borders in Maryland, Sinoe, Grand Gedeh, and Lofa counties.
“The preliminary purposes of the aerial patrol visit are to strengthen the security corporation by accessing interagency efforts with local joint security teams to monitor border security to avoid the cross-border threat, prevent illicit activities, and engage local leaders and communities, thereby building trust on security concerns”, Minister Sando added.
